What You Need To Know About GDPR:
Global protection for EU citizens – GDPR applies to any organisation whether they are based inside or outside of the UK. If you handle personal data of EU citizens, then you must comply.
Accountability – For the first time, organisations must keep a record of their processing activities and measures they have taken to avoid a breach of personal data. Being able to demonstrate compliance to GDPR is key.
Hard consent – Data subject must have demonstrated clear consent in order for their data to be used. This means that pre-ticked boxes or hard to understand privacy policies and terms and conditions will no longer constitute clear consent.
Notification of breaches – Organisations controlling data must inform their supervisory authority of a breach that has the potential to cause risk to data subjects within 72 hours of it being discovered. Failure to notify means failure to comply.
Bigger sanctionsthan ever before – Non compliance to GDPR can result in fines of up to €20m/£17.5m or 4% of the organisations global annual turnover (whichever is greater).
